The Garden Apartment
This was a nice apartment, and for under $30 U.S. per night (February 2009), you couldn’t beat it. It had a lovely garden right off the “kitchen”, a large bath, a Murphy double bed (which we left in the down position) and a comfortable seating area. It had wifi also, which we could only get a week signal from, but we had wifi at the school, so it wasn’t a problem for us. We were attending Spanish immersion classes and the school was almost right across the street. It’s up a little side street and there was the most charming little tiny grocery right up this street. Tiny. We bought bananas there. A man and his wife run it, and I think he speaks a little English, but not much. A real slice of Mexico. Lovely.
The apartment is not on the zocalo, which is a good 20 plus minute walk. And even though the walk is flat, you have to cross a lot of fairly busy streets. BUT, the bus was only 4 pesos (a quarter) and stopped almost in front of the door in both directions, and was simple, safe and interesting to use.
Here’s the website of the apartments. Have a look at their photos:

The apartment above us was really interesting. It had a tower, was on two floors, had a nice view and was really lovely. A little more expensive than ours, but much bigger. It’s downside was that all the stairs were circular, and would probably take a little getting used to. I’d worry about having to use the bathroom (downstairs) in the middle of the night (while upstairs).
There was no heat in our unit (common in Mexico), but you could rent a small attractive space heater for a nominal fee. It was cold at night in Guanajuato while we were there. Days were perfect, however.
There were a couple of good and interesting restaurants within a block of the apartment. And a park.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely. Good price, nice place. A little out of the way, but not so much as to be a problem. Nearer the center will be more expensive.
