If you’ve been wondering how long it takes to learn Spanish, then here’s a little help. Sherry has been studying Spanish for a little over two years. She’s been studying diligently – a minimum of two hours a day. Often more. She has taken classes here at home and has been to several immersion schools for up to a month at a time. Right now she is taking three different classes. Two hours one morning a week, an hour cambio one evening each week and a three hour class on one night each week. She’s worked hard, and even though she downplays how well she does, I’ve seen her in action in foreign countries – so I know she can speak Spanish.
Here’s the proof: two of her classmates volunteer at an area clinic that serves a largely Spanish speaking clientele. They told Sherry that she should check it out – that it’s a great way to practice Spanish and to give back to the community. So she checked it out, got an interview, was accepted, and started this week. It’s volunteer (read that as “no pay”), but it fits her well. Lots of face to face Spanish. Four hours a week (more if she wants it). You’ve got to figure that her Spanish can’t be too bad if they let her work with clients on her own after only a couple of hours of training. So… YEA. You go girl. Congrats. Next stop – - a paying gig!
Oh, by the way, we put our granddaughter on a plane bound for Costa Rica this morning. We signed her up with COSI (click “home” above, go to the Costa Rica page, then the San José page and look for COSI under “immersion schools”). We sent a camera with her and told her to take notes and pictures so that we can do an interview or an article when she gets back. This is her first international trip, her first flight alone and her first immersion experience. She turned 16 last week. You Europeans are saying “so what’s the big deal?”, but you travel a lot more than we do. For us this is a big deal. Stay tuned (for news about Costa Rica AND Sherry’s new job).

That’s so exciting! Congrats, Sherry! If you’re looking for another place to practice Spanish in your spare time, I happen to really like SpanishDict. They’ve got great Spanish Translation and other great stuff. I use their flashcards when I’m on breaks at work. Good luck!
