Spanish Steps (from the BBC) – a Review

The British travel the world.  It seems that they’re interested in learning Spanish as well. Certainly they’ve been in many of the immersion classes we’ve taken (notably Argentina and Mexico).  So it’s not surprising to find that they have online Spanish resources as well.  I’ve recently reviewed Mi Vida Loca, which is a BBC program.

They have other great stuff as well.  Here’s one:

SPANISH STEPS:  12 weeks of lessons for beginners.

Each lesson is about 20 minutes of an interactive slideshow, each has 10 keywords that are stressed.

The steps are divided into stages, such as “finding your feet” which has dialog for such things as finding a hotel, taking a taxi, ordering a snack, etc.

You can either click from slide to slide or watch a video of the slides, depending both on how fast you want to go and how fast your iternet connection is.

Other stages include “night out”, “shopping”, and so on.

SPANISH STEPS includes an activity (remember, this is for beginners) that, for instance, will have a word written in Spanish.  Click on the speaker icon and you will hear the word pronounced.  Click on “guess the word” and you get a multiple choice for that word.  Also in this activity is “streetwise”, which has a map with the streets labeled.  Click on a street name and it pronounces it for you.

“Type in the missing letters” is exactly that.  You hear it pronounced and see it printed with letters missing.  It’s good practice.  There’s a vocabulary list, grammar tips and (my favorite) “fact files”.  Click on accommodations in “fact files” and you’ll learn that there are hostals, pensiones, paradores and casa particulares.   Also under “fact files” are a very long list of other cultural items.  For instance, want to know the history of the siesta?  It’s under “fact files”.

You can sign up for email encouragement and even get a BBC certificate for finishing the course.

Did I mention that it’s free.  Yeah, baby!!!  Click HERE to go to Spanish Steps.
