I went to see a Tango show in England and loved it so much I wanted to come to Argentina to learn the dance in its original country. Learning Spanish was a secondary aim really, born mainly out of English politeness as it seemed rude to stay in a country without making an effort to learn the language.

COINED, a Spanish Immersion School in Buenos Aires, Argentina - a Review
April 30th, 2009 1 Comment
My wife and I are at two different levels of learning, so we felt that we got a good sense, between us, of what the school would be like for most students. This was my first immersion school, but not my wife’s, so that added to the our overview of the school.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Language School
February 13th, 2009 No Comments
Since there has been such difference in the Spanish immersion schools we’ve attended, we’ve been discussing what to look for in a school. We tried to research our schools ahead of time, but still, you never really know until you get there.
Naturally, you want to look at their website. And it’s a good idea to [...]

The Cost of Going to Buenos Aires, Argentina
November 23rd, 2008 7 Comments
In the spirit of helping people calculate what a trip to Buenos Aires is going to cost them, I’m going to give you the total of what it cost us, and break it down into general categories. Some things you might not do at all. School was our absolutely biggest expense. If you do what we did, without the school, you could knock a third off the price. If you pay full price for your airline tickets, instead of using frequent flyer miles as we did, then add back that third (and then some).

Home from Buenos Aires, Argentina

So our preparations paid off. We’re safe, well and home, and glad to be home, and only a little tired. Not bad for three weeks on the other side of the planet. Right this minute, if someone handed us a pair of tickets for a free two week cruise in the Caribbean that left tomorrow, we would …….. pack those bags. We’re out of here.

From Buenos Aires to Dallas Texas
November 22nd, 2008 No Comments
Customs leaving Argentina was a little different from here. We didn’t have to take off our shows, or show our 3 ounce containers of liguid, but there were more stops in the process, including an $18 US exit fee counter. And, as we were actually going onto the plane, there was someone actually checking (looking in) the carry on bags. Needless to say that it slowed the boarding process down considerably. We wound up only having about $60 US worth of Argentine money that we had to exchange.

Probably the last Post from Buenos Aires, Artgentina

I’m glad we came; Sherry’s glad we came. We’ve learned a lot: about Argentina, BA, South America, Spanish, ourselves, all sorts of things. We’ve met interesting people and done interesting things. We’re tired, but we’ve always said that if you didn’t come back from an adventure tired, then you didn’t do it right. And this was not a vacation, but an adventure. Now we need a vacation. A cruise. Hawaii. A beach. (Not gonna happen).
Thanks for reading the blog. For those that are interested, I’m going to continue about learning Spanish (but only once a week, probably). I’ll try to get Sherry to do the blog when she does her seven weeks of immersion in Mexico in January and February. If she will. And after the first of the year, please check our new website: www.learn-spanish-travel-spanish.com. It’s going to be a central resource for everything you need about learning Spanish at home and abroad, and for traveling in the Spanish speaking world. I hope you like it. Ciao, Bill

And Even Still More Random Thoughts About Buenos Aires, Argentina
November 20th, 2008 1 Comment
On Different Attitudes: On the train ride to Tigre, at several of the stations, we saw this large billboard about preventing breast cancer. The billboard consisted of about twenty pairs of breasts, of various sizes. No one seemed to pay any attention to it, and it didn’t have any graffitti or naughty words written on it. I can only imagine what would happen if that billboard were put up downtown in my town. Fire and brimstone. Damnation. Heads would roll.

Tango Class with Irena and the Girls in Buenos Aires, Argentina
November 20th, 2008 No Comments
The class basically consisted of two teachers who wandered among the students giving pointers, dancing with one or the other of the pair of students or leading them all in a group. I think the teachers changed each hour, because even though we got there at a little after nine, Irena’s class didn’t start til ten. So we drank beer and ate empanadas and watched until her class came up. Cathy had been riding horses all day and wasn’t at Giorgio’s when we left, so everyone was saying that she’d be too tired to come. But come she did (I figured she would).

Still More Random Thoughts from Buenos Aires, Argentina

Another day of class. It’s going pretty well, actually. I’m still at a loss for vocabulary, but I’ve tried to put my ego aside and just make the best of it. When we go over the homework, I don’t get any more of the material wrong than anyone else, with the possible exception of the German guy. And even that’s close, because I don’t get many wrong. It’s just during the class discussions that I get lost. Once in a while I won’t understand the assignment, but it’s because I just don’t understand what was said, not that I don’t understand the material. Today Sherry did the wrong assignment, so I’m not alone.
