What Makes a Good Spanish Teacher?
June 28th, 2009 2 Comments
We’ve found that about 10% of our teachers have been fairly bad (just like when we were in high school and college), 80% are okay (we learn stuff, enjoy it well enough), and 10% are terrific. The terrific ones inspire you and make you really look forward to the next day’s class. Now, it’s common to finish a Spanish class (especially an immersion class) and say “that was hard”, or “I think I learned a few things today”. But how great it is to come out of a class and say “That was FUN” or “I finally understand what those …. are all about now.” That’s the best. And even better, a really good teacher makes you come away from a class thinking that it was about YOU – that the teacher saw YOU and spoke to YOU and wanted YOU to succeed. Good feeling.

A Peace Corp Volunteer in the Dominican Republic – an Interview with Mandi Holmes
June 19th, 2009 No Comments
Peace Corps is something I wanted to do since I was in high school. It was always presented as this really exciting, but kind of scary and challenging thing. I did it for the adventure and the oppurtunity to do something that I knew would change me.

Under the “What are the odds of that?” category: While walking down “restaurant row” in Aguas Calientes I ran into a fellow I had Spanish classes with in Guanjuato Mexico. What are the odds of that?

Aguas Calientes, Peru – Doorway to Machu Picchu
May 18th, 2009 No Comments
Traffic isn’t bad here. In fact, it’s non-existent. There are no cars in Aquas Calientes for the simple fact that there are no roads leading to it. The only two ways you can get here are by train and by foot.

They call it the trip of a lifetime, one of the new seven wonders of the world. And I suppose it is. I know that I’ve wanted to come here ever since I saw that first photo of the city perched on top of a sheer mountain, surrounded by mountains.

Question: Should I take the Backpacker Express train or the Vista Dome? I read this question a lot on forums about M.P. Well, it depends.

Day Two in Peru — A Tour of the Sacred Valley
May 15th, 2009 1 Comment
We saw sheep herders and goat herders and people plowing behind oxen. We passed a string of mules (in a village) piled high with grain. We saw a bullfight. Okay, not a Spain type bull fight. A farmer was moving a couple of steers through town (think tiny, narrow streets) and just as we passed, two of his steers got into a bit of a tussle.

We Are In Peru
May 14th, 2009 No Comments
Well, we’re finally in Peru. After a three hour drive to Miami, across Alligator Alley (which had been closed several nights because of smoke from a major forest – swamp – fire), a few hours in the Miami Airport (which doesn’t seem to have restaurants, only food courts), a 6 hour flight to Lima, a [...]

Pecsi, Pri and sh (hunh?)

And it seems that for years now, a fairly large percentage of the population has been pronouncing Pepsi as Pecsi. I don’t know why. So Pepsi has started an ad campaign that discusses the “democracy of pronunciation”. It’s been a hit.
