Absolut Vodka Redraws the U.S./Mexico Border

October 30th, 2009 No Comments

Have you seen this?  It’s an advertisement for Absolut Vodka that ran in the Mexican media a few months ago.  It plays on the feelings (resentment?) of some Mexicans about the events leading up to the establishment of the current border (war, cash, etc).  What was Absolut Vodka thinking?  Did they think that no one [...]

Using Cortical Plasticity To Help You Learn Spanish

October 5th, 2009 No Comments

What some people have know intuitively for ages (mothers, for instance), scientists have now confirmed in the laboratory. The brain builds new neural connections, and strengthens older ones, at night when we’re sleeping. “It’s like you’ve thrown a switch”, says Dr. Frank. Synaptic changes are the very foundation of creating memory, and when you sleep, the mechanisms for creating those changes are turned on.

Will the Flu “Pandemic” Cancel Our Trip to Peru and Machu Picchu?

April 30th, 2009 No Comments

I know it’s not a pandemic yet, even though Wolf Blitzer keeps saying that level 5 means that a pandemic is “imminent”.   We’ve been planning this trip for a long time, and we certainly don’t want to overreact.  We’ve prepaid for the two nights in Aguas Calientes, paid deposits for our rooms in Cusco and [...]

The Flu “Epidemic” in Mexico

April 26th, 2009 No Comments

I am writing about is another flu that turned very serious - one that not many of us learned about in school. I’m always surprised that so few people seem to know about it, since it was so devastating and had such an impact on the world. I’m talking about the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and 1919. The current “novel” strain of flu bears some remarkably similar traits.

Academia Falcon in Guanajuato Mexico - a Review

March 19th, 2009 No Comments

The school wasn’t terrible, it wasn’t expensive, and it’s location wasn’t bad, but I won’t return to it and I cannot recommend it to others.
I should say, though, that we both loved Guanajuato. We would go back there in a heartbeat. But we would find a different language school.

Skype - A Review

February 22nd, 2009 No Comments

Skype!  The program that lets you talk computer to computer or computer to phone.  Computer to computer is free.  All you need are a microphone and speakers or earphones - at each end, of course.  Computer to phone has a fee, but it isn’t much.
My wife just got back from 7 weeks in Mexico. [...]

Saturday Trip to see the Butterflies near Valle Bravo, Mexico

February 15th, 2009 No Comments

We planned to begin our drive to the city of Valle Bravo around 9 a.m., but it was 10:30 before we got on the road. It was Saturday after all and it was going to be a day of relaxation as well as travel. Rodolfo works away from home during the week, so I think [...]

Universidad Internacional (UNINTER) In Cuernavaca Mexico - a Review

February 15th, 2009 2 Comments

The first week of school was a challenge but I loved it. It was exactly as I remembered it from last year except this time I am taking 5 hours each day of private classes instead of group classes. Plus one group class - a lecture.
The first three hours are for grammar. 50 minute [...]

Things to Consider When Choosing a Language School

February 13th, 2009 No Comments

Since there has been such difference in the Spanish immersion schools we’ve attended, we’ve been discussing what to look for in a school.  We tried to research our schools ahead of time, but still, you never really know until you get there.
Naturally, you want to look at their website.   And it’s a good idea to [...]
