Weird, Strange, Confusing Words in Spanish

August 21st, 2009 by Bill

If you were in the Catalan  area in Spain and said “No Smoking” (perhaps with a heavy Spanish accent), they would think you said   “No es moquin” or “no nose blowing”.

S-O-C-K-S, when spelled out loud, means “that’s correct” (eso sí que es).  There’s actually a joke (and several variations) that go along with this.

In Puerto Rico, to be angry is “Tener una cara de telefono ocupado”, literally “to have a face like a busy telephone”.

Ain’t language grand?

In Chile, a cabrito is a kid (or young goat), but in Peru it’s a gay man.  So be careful.

Here are a few websites that list all sorts of mistakes and weird, strange and confusing words.  How “embarazada”.
