If you’re thinking about doing your first immersion school, only have a week or two, don’t know much Spanish and are worried about getting in over your head, then San Miguel might be the place for you.
You can take the immersion classes and still have time for a vacation. It’s an interesting, pretty place and you would certainly have other English speakers to talk to. SMA has lots of restaurants and bars, but it’s small enough to walk everywhere if you stay near the central area.
You can take as many or as few classes as you want. It’s more expensive than a lot of other Mexican places, but it’s still cheap by U.S. standards.
If you get here and find that you’re serious about learning Spanish, then there is still lots of opportunity to hear it and speak it.
For someone seeking retirement in Mexico, SMA might be a good choice as well. Becoming fluent enough to have real conversations with people is really tough. To be comfortable in a foreign language requires a serious effort, and most people never make it, I think. A place like SMA could fulfill several needs. 1) It’s warmer in the winter than much of the U.S. 2) There are enough permanent English speakers that you would be able to have friends that spoke your native tongue. 3) There are things to do, so you could stay active (if you tried). 4) The “Mexican Experience” is very close at hand. A short drive or bus ride takes you away from this semi-Americanized town.
I understand that there are people who live here at least a few months of the year, every year, and hardly speak Spanish at all. I don’t agree with doing that, but I hear it happens.
